5 Things I Pinned – Week 5

Just in case you are visiting for the first time, each week I choose five of the things I recently pinned to my Pinterest boards to feature.  New to Pinterest?  Here’s a handy tutorial I posted.  I love having a place to quickly store all of the great ideas I find online, that allows me to quickly access them again.  (The Bionic Man appreciates it, too, since he no longer has to wait for me to wade through the hard drive when I want to show him things, anymore.)  So, here we go with Week #5….

1.  Ah, now I understand…

See, it’s really not about counting calories.  It’s about catching them and destroying them…before they destroy us!  (Couldn’t find the direct link to this one, sorry, so this will have to do.)

2.  Speaking of calories… [Read more...]

5 Things I Pinned – Week 4

Sorry, sorry, it’s been a busy day around here and I’m running a little late on this!  I’m afraid I had a little too much fun checking out fall decor ideas and fall fashion ideas….since it finally cooled down enough around here for us to feel like,”Hmmm, maybe summer actually will end, one day.”  Next week we’ll be back to the high 80′s again, so this fall fun may be short-lived.  I must pin for fall while I can!

Confused by all my talk of pins and pinning?  Well, check out my explanation of Pinterest HERE.

5 Things I’ve Pinned – Week 3

This week’s pins are as random as can be.  (Want to know more about pinning?  Click HERE.)

1.  Map drawer pulls from Etsy

I have a thing for maps.  Right now it is a thing that has not appeared outside of my brain or my Pinterest account, but it is still a thing.  I am determined at some point to have a map room.  Hence, I have stored dozens and dozens of things to put in the map room.  Now I’ve even got the cabinet hardware. 5 Things I Pinned This Week – Week 2

Went on a girls’ weekend getaway and forgot to post this earlier…enjoy!   (Read about pins and Pinterest here.)

1.  Kitchen Storage Ideas from BH&G

Okay, a kitchen remodel is nowhere in my future, but if it was, I’d be installing one of these.  In my big kitchen, I have a thing about paper towels and dishtowels never being where I need them.  Access is crucial when it comes to spills and drips.  This, I love.  Obviously, this particular cabinet was designed by a woman who spends time in a kitchen. 5 Things I Pinned this Week…

Starting today, I’d like to share some of my favorite “pins” on a weekly basis.  (No clue what I’m talking about?  Read about pins and Pinterest here.)  I’ll feature 5 things I’ve pinned during the past week every Saturday, with links to the sites they came from. Off we go with week number one!

1.  DIY Paper Plate Baskets from Sarah Hearts

Maybe it hails back to my teenage days as a “migrant” farm worker at the Bear Lake raspberry patches (such a long story), but there was just something about these cute baskets that appealed to me.  Perhaps I secretly want to run my own roadside farm stand?  If nothing else, it’s a cute way to carry our excess cherry tomatoes over to the neighbors. Pinteresting Tutorial

What?  What’s that you say?  I misspelled the word interesting?  Au contraire, my friends.  I have discovered the website Pinterest.

Well, to be fair, I didn’t exactly discover it.  Kami from No Biggie told her readers about it, here.  I was curious, and went exploring.  What I found is just too fun not to share!

About Pinterest
What it is:  I like to think of it as the virtual equivalent to my habit of ripping pages out of magazines and filing them.  Pinterest is an online tool that lets you store images on your own virtual “bulletin board.”  Here’s what the folks at Pinterest have to say about it:
Think of Pinterest as a virtual pinboard — a place where you can create collections of things you love and “follow” collections created by people with great taste.
People use Pinterest to collect and share all sorts of things — wedding inspiration, favorite T-shirts, DJ equipment. You name it, people are pinning it.
What you can do with it:  Sometimes I find things online–via blogs, Etsy, or other websites, that really intrigue me.  Maybe it’s an article of clothing I think I could sew myself.  It could be a DIY project that would work great in my home.  Often, I find recipes that I want to try out.  But the problem is, how do I store it, keep track of it, remember where it came from, and quickly retrieve it–after I’ve found it?  Pinterest solves that dilemma.  I can quickly “pin” things I like, and send them directly to be stored on one of my Pinterest boards.  The folks at Pinterest take care of making sure that there is an accompanying image, a link back, and that proper credit is given.  Fantastic!
Getting Started
Okay, since I’m just getting started with Pinterest, this is by no means an exhaustive tutorial.  But here are the basics.
Go to Pinterest.com and click on “Request an Invite.”  If an invitation doesn’t arrive in your inbox within a few hours, email me (triptoholland {at} gmail {dot} com).  Send me the email address you’d like to use, and I will send you an invitation.  (I understand there are a few bugs with the invites, right now, since this is a fairly new site.)
Once you have a Pinterest account, you’ll be able to create a profile, categorize a list of boards, and begin “pinning”.  I found that Pinterest walked me through creating my profile and board categories.  It was a cinch.  Here’s what my Pinterest page looks like:
I’ll use my screen to show you how to start pinning from your Pinterest page.
Pinterest is really user friendly.  When you begin pinning, Pinterest will walk you through the steps of getting a tool for your browser for easy pinning.
This is what the Pinterest tool looks like when you are browsing the web.
Nothing to it!
Once you’ve started, you can refer to your categorized bulletin boards when you are looking for some inspiration.  Here’s what is on my Crafting board, right now:
You can click on an individual picture to get more information about it–a description you wrote, where you found it, where you can read more about it, etc.
It’s genius!
From what I can tell, there is a social networking aspect to Pinterest, too.  For now, I’m really just interested in using it for online organization of things that inspire me.  But I’m guessing you could have a lot of fun swapping ideas back and forth with friends this way.
If you are anything like me, you are going to find Pinterest really handy for keeping track of the things that you saw once online, loved, and never could find again.  Enjoy!
