In the last few days, the Pinterest Awareness Challenge has really taken off!  Our board, The Faces of CHD, has reached over 700 followers and there are more than 75 brave faces representing the CHD community.  Each time one of the pins on the board is repinned, it represents another group of people who have become more aware of the special challenges, worries, and triumphs that are part of living life with a congenital heart defect.

As with anything that grows, we’ve experienced a few growing pains as the board has increased in popularity.  I’d like to respond to a few frequently asked questions. [Read more...]

A Special Visit from Some of the Faces of CHD

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to everyone who has shown their support and encouragement for The Faces of Congenital Heart Disease Awareness board on Pinterest.  Stefenie, Becca, and I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the response.  We went from just under 100 followers of the board on the day of it’s creation to more than 400 in less than 48 hours!  My own Lily and Superkid have been joined by the faces of 35 other people with special hearts…and that number seems to grow every time I check my email!

I want to give a shout-out to some special people who have donated their blogging star power to our cause: [Read more...]

The Faces of CHD – Pinterest Awareness Challenge

As many of you know, I am the mother of two little girls born with congenital heart defects, known here as Superkid and Lily.  I’m also an avid Pinterest pinner–I love collecting ideas and inspiration via Pinterest.

Those two elements of my life had absolutely nothing in common…until today!  With your help, I’d like to help promote awareness of and advocacy for children (and adults) with congenital heart defects by founding a Pinterest board devoted to sharing the stories of families affect by the #1 Birth Defect.  The board is titled, The Faces of CHD – Congenital Heart Awareness Week Feb 7-12, 2012.” [Read more...]

Tender Mercies, Ice Cream Edition

I am the first to admit that frozen dairy products are a weakness of mine.  Especially if they start with a Coldstone and end with a Creamery.  And even more especially if they are homemade by my dad, brother, or mother-in-law.  This is why I had to move across the country.  Because I have no self control.

Anywho, thanks to Pinterest, I can now have my ice cream and eat it, too.  And not feel one single bit guilty.  See, I discovered this pin (exhibit A in the trial where I prove that I actually intend to do things with my pins):

See where it says 1 banana + 2 tbsp cocoa?  I decided if it really was that simple, it must be tried.

After all, do you know what two flavors of ice cream I mix together every single time I visit Coldstone Creamery?  That’s right, chocolate and banana. [Read more...]

5 Things I Pinned – Week 5

Just in case you are visiting for the first time, each week I choose five of the things I recently pinned to my Pinterest boards to feature.  New to Pinterest?  Here’s a handy tutorial I posted.  I love having a place to quickly store all of the great ideas I find online, that allows me to quickly access them again.  (The Bionic Man appreciates it, too, since he no longer has to wait for me to wade through the hard drive when I want to show him things, anymore.)  So, here we go with Week #5….

1.  Ah, now I understand…

See, it’s really not about counting calories.  It’s about catching them and destroying them…before they destroy us!  (Couldn’t find the direct link to this one, sorry, so this will have to do.)

2.  Speaking of calories… [Read more...]

5 Things I Pinned – Week 4

Sorry, sorry, it’s been a busy day around here and I’m running a little late on this!  I’m afraid I had a little too much fun checking out fall decor ideas and fall fashion ideas….since it finally cooled down enough around here for us to feel like,”Hmmm, maybe summer actually will end, one day.”  Next week we’ll be back to the high 80′s again, so this fall fun may be short-lived.  I must pin for fall while I can!

Confused by all my talk of pins and pinning?  Well, check out my explanation of Pinterest HERE.

1. & 2.  Cork Flooring from Re-Nest and Carpet-Tile.org

5 Things I’ve Pinned – Week 3

This week’s pins are as random as can be.  (Want to know more about pinning?  Click HERE.)

1.  Map drawer pulls from Etsy

I have a thing for maps.  Right now it is a thing that has not appeared outside of my brain or my Pinterest account, but it is still a thing.  I am determined at some point to have a map room.  Hence, I have stored dozens and dozens of things to put in the map room.  Now I’ve even got the cabinet hardware. International Food Fun – Week 2

I embarked on Week 2 of my goal to fix something new! interesting! exciting! international! for dinner with high hopes.  Not only was I planning to make something I’d never made before, it’s origins were going to be completely exotic.  To top it all off, it was going to be incredibly healthy–no frying involved.  Hold on to your hats, folks.

My inspiration?  This picture from a recipe I discovered on Pinterest.

New?  Check! Interesting?  Absolutely! Exciting?  For sure–that sauce is called chili sauce!  International?  All the way from Vietnam!  Healthy?  With vegetables, seafood, and rice, it better be! [Read more...]

5 Things I Pinned this Week…

Starting today, I’d like to share some of my favorite “pins” on a weekly basis.  (No clue what I’m talking about?  Read about pins and Pinterest here.)  I’ll feature 5 things I’ve pinned during the past week every Saturday, with links to the sites they came from. Off we go with week number one!

1.  DIY Paper Plate Baskets from Sarah Hearts

Maybe it hails back to my teenage days as a “migrant” farm worker at the Bear Lake raspberry patches (such a long story), but there was just something about these cute baskets that appealed to me.  Perhaps I secretly want to run my own roadside farm stand?  If nothing else, it’s a cute way to carry our excess cherry tomatoes over to the neighbors.
